HEALING

2013 - current

Work that helped explore the powers sculpting, painting and observations of natures ability to heal and regenerate and it's similarities to healing physical trauma. I created paintings on paper first during a series I call Cognitive Dissonance. Transferring them to recycled and repurposed wood found from tossed furniture like chairs, tables and shelving units created a deeper therapeutic experience.

INSPIRATION

This is a series I seek to revisit, pushing the imagery to be more fleshy, damaged skin cells and the power of the body to heal itself. I want to incorporate textures of lichen, reminiscent to the neon algae found on the red rocks of the Mojave Desert where I grew up. A tenacious organism that defies droughts. The miss the skies in Vegas that stretched for miles radiating in a rainbow of colors through the day and year. The weight of their captivating, ephemeral and powerful presence grounded me. I'm also amazed at the beauty of raku in its combustive process burning a wild mysterious pattern.

MATERIALS

My beauties, found and donated wood from all over the country I save to use for paintings. I love the stains and scratches they most often come with. Stories from the past, previous lives and encounters that remain a mystery.
